2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Radiator on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before taking out the radiator, first disconnect both negative battery cables, remove the nuts on the positive cable at the top and place the cable it was attached to at the rear of the car. Drain whatever liquid is in the cooling system separately and carefully, remembering not to remove or loosen the draining accessories in its hottest form. Wear safety glasses and use the HPC-20 tool for larger clamps or special clamp tool number 6094 for servicing constant tension hose clamps. Remove the holding clamps and tubes from the radiator, then get the coolant reserve/overflow tank hose off the nipple on the radiator filler neck and lift the coolant reserve/overflow tank straight off the fan shroud. Remove the overflow hose from the radiator and both connectors at the windshield washer reservoir tank before you try to remove the tank. First unclip the metal clips holding the shroud to the top of the radiator, then remove the four fan shroud bolts and finally move the shroud to the rear so it rests on the fan blades beside the engine. Untighten the two radiator upper mounting bolts and lift the radiator upwards, out of the front of the engine compartment so you do not damage the cooling fins or tubes. Spray the fins with cold water and air the radiator fins to help heat transfer and check the side tanks for cracks or any broken or missing fittings, making sure there are no signs of leakage at the joint where the tanks patch to the radiator core. Check the core to see if any of the cooling fins are damaged, bent or missing and also check for broken cooling tubes. While installing, place the fan shroud over the fan blades towards the engine, install the rubber insulators onto the lower part of the radiator's alignment dowels and slowly bring the radiator into place, guiding the dowels as you lower it into the lower radiator support. Fasten the two upper mounting bolts, using a 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.) torque wrench. Connect your radiator hoses, fit them with clamps and place the transmission cooler lines onto the radiator tank. Inspect and attach the quick connect fittings, making sure no debris is inside and the lines are secure. Attach the reservoir tank for the windshield washer to the bottom side of the dash panel, position the fan shroud at the radiator side flanges and lock the shroud with 6 Nm (50 inch lbs.) torque mounting bolts. Put the metal clips onto the top of the fan shroud, join the reserve/overflow tank hose to the filler neck nipple and attach the reserve/overflow tank to the shroud. Reattach the negative battery cables, set the positive battery to the radiator head, tighten all mounting nuts, place the heater controls to full heat, fill the engine coolant system and allow the engine to warm up with the cooling and fluid tank levels checked.
