2002 Dodge Stratus Brake Pad Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair Brake Pads on 2002 Dodge Stratus?
A: For front brake pad repair and service, elevate the car, take off the wheel and tire from one side and then do the same on the other side. Lift out the anti-rattle spring under the outboard side, then pull the caps off the caliper guide pin bolts and remove them. Remove the caliper, caliper adapter and brake rotor from the vehicle, since the outboard shoe can stay attached to the adapter while the inner shoe comes off with the caliper. Use a wire or cord from the front strut assembly to keep the caliper from touching and injuring the brake fluid hose. Take the outboard brake shoe off the caliper adapter and pull the inboard brake shoe away from the caliper piston, so the retaining clip comes loose. Apply this same technique to the other side as well. During cleaning, use a fine spray of water on the brake components and remove them with a damp towel, discarding any material with asbestos fibers in an airtight container. Check the brake shoes for uneven wear and see if they are too thin; change them when you measure the lowest point at 7.0 mm (9/32 inch). Change both shoes on the inside and outside of the calipers and reinstall any undamaged ones in their original spots. For installation, get the piston out of the caliper all the way, remove the paper cover from the noise gasket and carefully fit the new brake shoe into the piston. Cover the adapter surfaces with Mopers Dielectric grease and slide in the new outboard shoe to the adapter on the caliper. Place the brake caliper above the brake rotor and adapter, connect the caliper guide pin bolts and tighten them to 26 ft. lbs./35 Nm, without crossing the threads. Place the new caliper hold down spring and the caps over the guide pin bolts onto the outboard side. Repeat the process on the other side and bolt the wheel and tire assemblies on again, tightening the wheel mounting nuts firmly to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) in the right order. Adjust the vehicle so the wheels are close to the ground, test the brakes by pumping several times and then look at and change the brake fluid as needed.
