2002 Dodge Stratus Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter on a 2.0L/2.4L Engine on 2002 Dodge Stratus?
A: You should start by lifting the vehicle on a hoist, pouring penetrating oil on the band clamp and bolts of the resonator/pipe assembly and on those connecting the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. Take away the ground strap from the muffler and release the seal on the band clamp for the resonator/pipe. After gently loosening the muffler supports, clean the isolators with soapy water or silicone spray rather than petroleum lubricant. Remove the resonator/pipe and muffler/pipe as an assembly, undo the connection to the downstream oxygen sensor and remove the fasteners that attach the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. Once you've taken the catalytic converter out of the vehicle, discard the old gasket. Check the catalytic converter for blocked passages and use a bore scope or flashlight to spot any flaws in the element, including any broken or liquefied substrate, before you consider replacement. When installing, prepare the sealing surfaces on the manifold, add a new gasket and if changing the catalytic converter, move the sensor to your new part. Attach the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold slightly, then place the resonator/pipe and muffler/pipe assembly loosely onto the outlet pipe of the catalytic converter. Gently place the support isolators at the muffler's mounts and then position the exhaust system properly. As the catalytic converter and its hanger links are very sensitive, ensure you use the 5ft. lbf. torque wrench to avoid stripping the nuts. Secure the ground strap to the muffler and bring the vehicle back to the ground.
