  A: The first thing to do for servicing or repairing a catalytic converter is to detach the negative battery cable and the upstream oxygen sensor connector. First, remove the three converter attaching nuts visible in the engine compartment and then hoist the vehicle up and take out the exhaust cross-under pipe. Then, extract the last bolt that holds the converter to the exhaust manifold and remove the converter, getting rid of its gasket. Cool the exhaust system before checking the catalytic converter, given its operating temperature is very high. Make sure the catalytic converter is not restricted and visually verify the element's condition with a borescope; if you cannot use one, take apart the converter and use a flashlight to check the substrate for cracks or melting. Make sure to figure out the real cause of the problem before you buy a new catalytic converter, since most failures happen because of air, fuel or ignition.
