2002 Dodge Stratus Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Clock Spring Assembly on 2002 Dodge Stratus?
A: Before touching the Clock Spring Assembly or Spiral Cable, you should disconnect and insulate the battery negative remote cable and allow at least two minutes for the capacitor to drain. Take out the steering wheel, making sure to guide all wires via the steering wheel armature, to keep them safe. For every replacement of a deployed Driver air bag, a new clock spring must be used. After that, remove the multi-function switch. Pull up on the top, front lock housing slightly to help the clock spring slide over it and if the spring is bad, it must be replaced; note that front air bag-deployment or impact can cause you to need a new clock spring. When adding or replacing a clock spring, use the centering procedure to make it centered in the clock assembly. Put the top locking tab over the hole on the lock and press it down until it fits. Put the multi-function switch into place and tighten it to 1.5 to 2.5 Nm (14-22 in. lbs.). Run the wires through the opening in the steering wheel armature and fix the steering wheel in place. Install the switch leads from the switches to the speed control wires, mount the steering wheel cover back inside the car and put the switches in place. Connect the horn lead and then secure both yellow air bag wires (known as black and grey connectors) to the Driver air bag. Remember to release the secondary latch afterwards and make sure there is enough slack for the wires, so they are not pinched. Be sure not to attach the battery negative cable when the air bag system is being tested.
