2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Automatic Transmission Filter Using Mopar ATF +4 on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Always use Mopar ATF +4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid) Type 9602 for the transaxle's fluid and filter servicing and repair. It's important to change the transmission filter at the same time as changing the transmission oil and always clean out the oil pan magnet with a clean, dry cloth. If you take apart the transaxle, change the fluid and the filter as well. To start, lift the vehicle on a hoist and place a container under the oil pan of the transaxle. Relax the bolts holding the pan and then tap lightly on one corner of the pan to make the fluid escape before you take it off. Fit a new filter and O-ring at the valve body's bottom, give the oil pan and magnet a thorough clean, use fresh Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant to install the pan and tighten all bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Put four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 in the dipstick hole, turn on the engine and let it run for at least one minute. Following the application of the wheels brake, select each of the gear positions after the selector lever, only ending in drive or park. Make sure the transaxle fluid is at 3 mm (1/8 inch) below the lowest mark on the dipstick after first checking the level and adding fluid if necessary, then check the level again when the transaxle reaches a temperature of 180°F. Pull out the dipstick and reinsert it, all the way in, to prevent sand or other debris from getting inside the transaxle. To use the dipstick tube fluid suction method, ensure the transaxle is hot, use a proper fluid suction hose and put the other end into the tube tip at the low end of the oil pan for suctioning all the fluid. With the suction line taken out, pour four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 through the dipstick opening, fire up the engine and check and adjust the level of fluid as you did before.
