2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Torque Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Torque Converter on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, remove the transmission and torque converter from the vehicle and make sure a drain pan is set up at the end of the transmission housing. We need to be sure that lifting the vehicle is safe, since the center of gravity will change once the torque converter is removed which can make the vehicle unstable because of its weight. Push the torque converter toward the front until the center hub is above the oil pump's seal and then take it off. Verify the converter hub and drive notches for any edges, burrs, scratches or nicks and use 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth to sand them if required, so they won't scratch the pump seal. Apply some transmission fluid to the hub and seal lip of the converter, then carefully place the converter in the transmission's housing, without hurting the seal or bushing. Place the torque converter through the seal opening on the oil pump, insert the hub into the pump and while pushing the converter towards the pump, turn it until it is fully resting on the gears. Place a scale and straightedge under the lugs, making sure the converter's lugs are placed 1/2 in. toward the back as it is fully seated. Should the job require it, use a C-clamp on the converter inside the housing, replace the transmission into the vehicle and top up the fluid as recommended.
