2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a CV Boot on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before servicing or repairing the boot of the outer CV joint, take the halfshaft assembly out of the car. Remove the big boot clamp attaching the inner CV joint sealing boot to the CV joint housing and the small boot clamp on the outer CV joint sealing boot and then slide the sealing boot all the way down the interconnecting shaft. After you clean everything and support the shaft in a vice with protective caps, tap off the outer CV joint with a soft-faced hammer if it is stuck in place. Disconnect your sealing boot from the interconnecting shaft by taking off the large circlip beforehand. Check the outside of both the CV joint assembly and the interconnecting joint for signs of excessive wear; if any parts seem worn, you'll need to replace the entire halfshaft assembly since its components cannot be fixed. For the installation, position the new sealing boot over the interconnecting shaft so the raised bead fits in the bore hole. Place the splines of the shaft against the splines on the outer CV joint assembly and guide the joint on by hand. We should use a soft-faced hammer to slowly strike the stub axle's end so that the outer CV joint is properly aligned on the circlip. Apply half of the lubricant onto the CV joint assembly and the rest into the rubber boot stretch. Slide Special Tool C-4975-A over the interconnecting shaft before fitting the sealed boot; this will help ensure the boot seal does not become distorted by crimping. Lay the sealing boot into the groove of the outer CV joint housing and clamp it with the same crimper tool. Following this, fit the halfshaft assembly onto the center section once again.
