A: For tie rod outer maintenance, first lift the car and remove the wheel and tire. Untwist the inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod jam nut, then unscrew and take out the nut that holds the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle by turning it with a wrench as you hold the tie rod stud with a socket. attached Remover, Special Tool C-3894-A to separate the tie rod stud from the steering knuckle and then unthread the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod. Slide the outer tie rod over the inner tie rod, making sure the jam nut has been put on the inner rod, but don't tighten it yet. Apply the boot heat shield onto the tie rod end, fit the outer tie rod into the steering knuckle and begin to screw the nut on the tie rod stud. Firmly secure the tie rod stud and tighten the nut on the tie rod with a crowfoot by rotating it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Be sure not to twist the steering gear boot while tightening the tie rod jam nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) torque. After fitting the assembly back in place, tighten each wheel nut a few at a time in a crisscross pattern to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), lower the vehicle and set the front wheel alignment toe.
