For servicing or repairing the outer tie rod, elevate the vehicle, take off the wheel and tire assembly. Loose the inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod jam nut, then remove the nut connecting the outer tie rod end to the
Steering Knuckle by first keeping the tie rod stud held by an 11/32 socket, then using a wrench to remove the nut. Attach the Remover, Special Tool MB-991113, to the tie rod end stud and pull it from the steering knuckle and then pull out the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod. Attach the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod and leave the jam nut on the inner rod without ever tightening it. After that, hang the heat shield or boot onto the tie rod end, place the tie rod end into the steering knuckle and begin screwing in the attaching nut. As you hold the stud stationary, tighten the nut by hand and use a crowfoot and socket to twist it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Make sure to tighten the tie rod jam nut to 75 Nm or 55 ft. lbs., after that, put back the wheel and tire, drive the car lower and align the front tires.
