2003 Chrysler Town & Country Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter for the 41TE on 2003 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: When changing or repairing the fluid filter, get the car on a hoist, position a container beneath the oil pan and drain the old fluid. Relax the bonds on the pan and gently tap a side to release the fluid before you take out the oil pan. Place a clean Mopar filter and O-ring on the bottom of the valve body, follow this with cleaning the oil pan and magnet and replacing the pan using stiff new adhesive. Pour four quarts of the Mopar version of ATF+4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid) Type 9602 through the dipstick hole, start the engine and have the car idle for a minute at least. Having applied the parking and service brakes, change the selector lever to each position and end up in park or neutral. Verify the fluid level and increase it so that it is 3 mm (1/8 inch) under the lowest mark on the stick, then recheck it when the transaxle has reached 180°F. Be sure to totally seat the dipstick so dirt cannot get inside the transaxle. Before using the dipstick tube fluid suction method, confirm the transaxle is hot, use a proper pump to insert the tube into the dipstick, making sure the lower end is reached to drain the oil completely. After you have emptied the fluid, unhook the suction line, add four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 (Type 9602) through the dipstick opening, start the engine and check the fluid level using the dipstick the same way as before, making sure the dipstick is properly seated a second time.
