2003 Chrysler Voyager CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a CV Boot and CV Joint for Inner on 2003 Chrysler Voyager?
A: Until the Constant Velocity Joint Boot needs replacement, first take out the half shaft from your vehicle, discard the big clamp that secures the seal inside the tripod joint area, then remove the small boot clamp from where it is attached to the shaft. Carefully slide the sealing boot off the tripod housing and down over the shaft so that the bearings on the spider do not fall out. Elbow the snap-ring that supports the spider in its place and, if you can't remove it, tap the spider assembly with a brass drift before you tap the tripod shaft. Look at the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and interconnecting shaft; if any wear is found, the half shaft assembly must be replaced because its parts cannot be fixed. The first step is to apply the retaining clamp to the interconnecting shaft. Then, fit the new sealing boot so the bead on its small diameter end is in the groove on the shaft. Put the spider assembly onto the interconnecting shaft until the spider retaining snap-ring is easily installed and sits completely in its groove. Use half of the grease included in the seal boot package inside the tripod and put the other half into the sealing boot. Adjust the tripod housing over the spider assembly and shaft, then evenly fit the clamp from the inner CV joint seal boot over the sealing boot. Screw the crimping tool C-4975-A until the clamp is closed completely, so that the seal boot is not affected. Put the sealing boot inside the tripod housing retaining groove and fasten the clamp as level as possible. Compatibility of the lobe and recess on the trilobal boot with the other three tripod interface mounting points should be checked and maintained. Introduce a trim stick through the inner V-joint head by driving it between the CV housing and the sealing boot, with the trim stick lying flat against the tripod housing to avoid damaging the boot. Place the interconnecting shaft in the middle of the tripod joint housing, take out the trim stick to let the air equalize and clamp the CV joint sealing boot to the CV joint, following the right procedure for your boot clamp type. To crimp crimp type clamps, use tool C-4975-A and to secure low profile latching type clamps, use a clamp locking tool. Reach in and put the half shaft back into its proper position.
