2003 Dodge Dakota Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install Drive Belts on 3.9L and 5.9L Engines with a Spring-Loaded Automatic Belt Tensioner on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: All belt types, including those with or without air conditioning or power steering, have a spring-loaded automatic belt tensioner on 3.9L and 5.9L engines. Remove the tension from the belt by attaching a socket/wrenchet to the pulley mounting bolt and turning the automatic tensioner assembly clockwise until the tension is gone. Take the belt off the idler pulley and then take it off the car. While installing, ensure the water pump spin is correct so the need for engine cooling is normal. Set the drive belt on all of the pulleys except the pulley called the idler which you'll find in the spot between the A/C compressor and generator. Next, join a socket/wrench to the bolt on the automatic tensioner and twist it clockwise until the belt travels past the idler pulley. Return the tensioner into its position and remove the wrench so the belt settles correctly onto all the pulleys. After installing, check that belt indexing marks are in the proper position.
