2004 Dodge Dakota Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Drive Belt on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing the drive belt on these engines, first unhook the negative battery cable. You should take care not to let the tensioner arm snap back to its free position, because doing so can cause serious damage to it. An automatic spring-loaded tensioner holds the desired belt tension and you cannot change this setting. To remove, turn the tensioner until it touches its limiting point, unwrap the belt and then turn it again into the bow position. Make sure the serpentine belt is routed properly and all pulleys are working well so the engine doesn't become too hot because of inadequate water pump rotation. Start with the belt under all the pulleys, except the idler pulley, then rotate the adjustment arm all the way, route the belt over the idler into place and allow the arm to turn so that the belt is evenly seated on the pulleys. After fitting the new belt, inspect the belt wear indicator. On 4.7L engines, the space between the tang and the housing stop should not go over 24 mm (0.94 inches). When the measurement goes beyond what's permitted, swap out the accessory drive belt.
