2003 Dodge Durango Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: To perform service and repair the power steering pump, switch off the engine and inspect the fluid in the reservoir to protect yourself. To avoid hurting the power steering pump or systems, always put in Mopar ATF+4; never overfill it. Clean your filler cap and check the amount of liquid which should be COLD when the engine is cold and at a normal temperature. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, place pump fluid into the reservoir as directed and allow it to sit for a good two minutes. With the engine turned off, raise the front and slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock 20 times, unless your vehicle has long return pipes or coolers, when you should turn it 40 times. Fire up the engine and pay attention to the fluid level while the vehicle is idle. After lowering the front wheels and idling the engine for two minutes, drive the wheel back and forth to confirm power assist and a noise-free operation of the pump. If the fluid is foamy or very milky, give the car a little time and try again, since running a foamy fluid for too long may harm the pump.
