2002 Dodge Durango Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: To fix or repair the pump, switch off the engine first and check the fluid to make sure no moving parts can injure you. Only use Mopar (Ms-9602) Atf+4 in the power steering system; any other fluid may harm the pump and system and don't overfill. Carefully check the dipstick to see that you are in the cold reading at normal temperature. Turn the steering wheel so it is fully pointing to the left, fill the pump fluid reservoir correctly and let the fluid stand for two minutes or more. Tilt the front wheels in the air and spin the wheel from one end to the other without the engine running. If your vehicle has a long return line or oil cooler, turn the wheel 40 times. Let the engine idle and watch over the oil level as you start it. Put the wheels down and have the engine idle for a couple of minutes to check, then try turning the steering wheel to confirm it and the pump is making little or no noise. Should the fluid show in a foamy or milky state, let the vehicle stand for a little before repeating the process, as high foam could damage the pump if driven over a long period.
