2003 Dodge Durango Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: To work on or repair the rack and pinion, turn the steering wheel to the lock position and lift the vehicle so it stands supported on ramps or axle stands. Pull the nuts out of the tie rod ends and then use the Puller C-3894-A to take apart the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Disconnect the power steering lines from where they connect to the rack and pinion and gently take out the lower coupler bolt as you move the coupler off the rack and pinion. After that, remove the mounting bolts from the front crossmember and take off the rack and pinion. Perform a check of the bushings first. Change out and replace those that show signs of damage. Connect the rack and pinion to the front crossmember and then secure it with bolts tightened to 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.). Slip the shaft coupler onto the rack and pinion, insert the socket nut and tighten the bolt so its torque is 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Thoroughly clean the studs on the tie rod ends and knuckles and add the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, closing the clamp bolts at 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Put the power steering lines back on the rack and pinion and tighten the hose to produce 31 Nm of torque (23 ft. lbs.). Take out the support and slowly roll the vehicle down, then open the steering wheel lock. Add fluid until the toe level is at the correct point and then move on to the next step.
