2003 Dodge Durango Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: The first thing to do is park the vehicle in PARK, lower it and then raise it up. Remove the eyelet on the transmission shift lever and pull the cable adjuster from its bracket. Carefully lower the vehicle and pull out the dash insulation pad (if using) to facilitate access to the gearshift cable grommet and remove that grommet from the dash panel. Dealership technicians should carefully remove any trim that blocks gearshift access, unplug the wiring of the BTSI module, remove it from the vehicle and gently pull the gearshift cable through the hole in the dash leading inside the vehicle. Pull the transmission side of the gearshift cable up into the dash panel and make sure the grommet seats in the opening. Place the end of the cable into the hold on the steering column bracket, pushing it until it's secure and attach the other end to the shift lever ball stud. Raise the vehicle, engage the transmission lever in its "PARK" detent and use the prop shaft to check that the transmission is in PARK. Put the gearshift cable through the transmission mount, attaching it at the bracket on one end with its ears and at the other end to the manual shift lever's ball stud. Drop the vehicle, push downward on the IFCD lock until it clicks, verify the range sensor is working correctly and handle the gearshift cable and BTSI mechanism as required.
