2003 Dodge Neon Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before servicing or repairing the camshaft oil seal, first unplug the negative cable of your battery, remove the front cover of the timing belt and pull out the belt assembly and tensioner, without turning the camshaft or crankshaft. Use the special tool C-4687, along with modified C-4687-1, to secure the camshaft sprocket and eliminate the bolt first, then unmount the sprocket and cover over the rear timing belt. Gently pry the camshaft seal off with the proper tool to avoid marking either the seal or the cylinder head and if the seal's surface is dirty or has any marks, polish it with 400 grit paper. First, use Special Tool MD998306 to set the camshaft seal against the cylinder head and flush with it. Next, install the rear timing belt cover and the camshaft sprocket. Never use an impact wrench on the camshaft sprocket bolt to keep the timing pin safe; instead, fix the bolt by hand with Special Tools C-4687 and modified C-4687-1 while holding the sprocket; use a pressure of 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). After that, install the timing belt and tensioner, place the front cover and secure the negative battery wire. Once all lifts are set, push and hold the button for more than three seconds, activate the "Engine" diagnostic menu, then tap "Miscellaneous" and choose "ReLearn Cam Crank".
