2003 Dodge Neon Release Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Release Bearing on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before servicing or repairing the clutch release bearing, it is necessary to take the transaxle out of the car. Put the lever and bearing assembly perpendicular to the table, secure the lever release with both hands in the stud socket area and pull the lever away from the pivot-stud carefully, not using a screwdriver or pry bar to avoid harming the spring clip. Gently take the lever from the bearing thrust plate, being careful not to hurt the retention tabs on the bearing. Keep the sealed and oiled bearing out of oil or solvent and check that it moves smoothly and slightly with pressure, as a small amount of lubricant drag is usual. When a bearing makes noise or moves harshly and feels dry, you should change out the whole unit. Make sure the pivot stud spring clips on the back side of the clutch lever are in good shape; if they are cracked or bent, replace the clutch lever. Before building the lever to the bearing, brush the pivot pocket in the lever and both lever arms with grease and make sure that the little pegs on the bearing go over the lever arms. Building the assembly as one, put the bearing and lever set onto the bearing retainer of the input shaft, snap the clutch lever onto the pivot ball and fit the transaxle again.
