2003 Dodge Neon Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall an Axle Shaft on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Start by taking off the negative battery terminal, gating the transaxle in park and then hoisting the car up. After removing the wheel and tire, take apart the halfshaft to hub cotter pin, nut lock, wave washer and hub nut. When you have ABS, take out the front wheel speed sensor and arrange the harness where it won't interfere. Taking care to not harm the ball joint seal, loosen the nut and bolt holding the ball joint stud in the steering knuckle by prying down the lower control arm. Don't touch the inner C/V joint and use a support for the halfshaft during the work. Strain outward on the knuckle and press inward on the halfshaft to remove it from the knuckle and insert Puller 1026 if you need help. Support the outer section of the halfshaft assembly and pull out the inner tripod joints from the side gears, as you remove the retaining ring using a punch. Push forcefully on the joint during your punch to loosen and remove it. Take hold of the inner tripod joint and connecting shaft, then remove the inner tripod joint straight off the transaxle side gear and oil seal, but without letting the spline or snap ring touch the sealing lip. As you install the gear set again, clean the spline and oil seal sealing spot of the tripod joint, apply a small amount of grease and seat the tripod joint into the transaxle with your hands to make sure the snap ring is set as well. Get rid of any debris from the outer C/V joint and make sure your steering knuckle is clean, then put the halfshaft back into the front hub and secure the steering knuckle to its ball joint stud. Place a new steering knuckle on the ball joint stud bolt and nut, adjusting the tension to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) and then wash the threads on the outer stub axle and fit the hub nut which should be tightened to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the front wheel and tire and screw in the lug nuts until they reach 128 Nm (95 ft.lbs.). Check the fluid in the transaxle assembly and lower the vehicle. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable.
