2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Service and Install a Fuel Rail on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Since the fuel system holds pressure constantly, you need to release it before servicing the fuel rail. The entire assembly of left and right fuel rails should be changed, as separating the halves where the attachment tubes join is not an option because the design contains no clamps. Ensure you straighten the tubes before removal without forcing the tube in any way. First, take off the fuel tank filler tube cap and then complete the fuel system pressure release procedure. Remove the black wire from the negative battery, remove the air duct and air box connected to the throttle body and then use two bolts to remove the air resonator mounting bracket. To disconnect, remove the fuel rail latch clip and fuel line using the correct special tool. Remove any required vacuum lines at the throttle body and come away from all six fuel injector connectors, keeping track of the wires too if the harness isn't marked. Remove the ignition wires from the five throttle body sensors and also remove the igniton coils connected to all throttle body sensors. Next, unscrew the bolts holding the fuel rails to the engine, gently move the rail back and up until the injectors start to escape the machine grooves in the cylinder head and do the same on the right side. To start, remove the fuel rail with the injectors attached from the engine. In case you are using fuel injectors, make sure the bores in the intake manifold are clean and add a little oil to the O-ring of each fuel injector to ease the fitting. Place the fuel rail/fuel injector assembly so that it fits into the machined part on the head, making sure each injector does not tear the O-rings. Place pressure on both sides of the fuel rail until the injectors reside on the shoulder of the cylinder head, then fix and tighten the four bolts that hold the fuel rail according to the specifications. Set back the six ignition coils, attach the electrical wires from the throttle body and then do the same for all the electrical connectors at the fuel injectors to lock them in place. Connect the vacuum lines you need, install the air resonator mounting bracket, connect both ends of the fuel line to the fuel rail and then put in the air box and air duct. After that, plug back in the battery cable, turn on the engine and examine the system for any leaks.
