2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Power Steering Pump on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Pump service should begin by draining and siphoning the power steering fluid out of the reservoir, then remove the serpentine belt. Do not remove the fitting at the pump where the high-pressure hose is connected; this can loosen without another wrench supporting it; if it does, make sure to retighten it to 57 - 67 Nm (40 - 50 ft. lbs.) before you continue. Removing the fitting from the pump causes the internal spring and valve parts to separate, so the pump has to be replaced. Afterwards, remove the return hose and the pressure hose, then you can access and remove the pump's three bolts that secure it through the pulley holes. When you're installing, match the pump with the mounting holes in the left cylinder head and screw in the three pump bolts through the pulley access holes, applying 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) of tightening force. Connect the pressure line and bring back the hose to the pump and reservoir, secure the line at 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.), place the serpentine drive belt and fill the power steering pump.
