2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before servicing or fixing the power steering pump, park the car, turn off the engine and check the fluid to avoid injury caused by the pump moving. Be sure to use Mopar (Ms-9602) Atf+4 in the power steering system, since using any other fluid could damage the pump and system; try not to overfill. Carefully clean the filler cap and confirm that the reading shown on the dipstick is Cold when the fluid is at average temperature. Move the steering wheel as far left as it will go, top up the pump fluid reservoir to the correct level and make sure the fluid settles for at least two minutes. Raise the front end, stop the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock, noticing the fluid level 20 times if there is no oil cooler or cooler line-turn it 40 times if there is one. Turn on the engine and ensure the fluid is not dropping while it is running slowly. Lower the front wheels and sit with the car idling for two minutes, then turn the steering wheel to check the power and how quiet the pump operates. Should the fluid look like foam or milk, wait a few minutes and test it again, since running the vehicle like this for a long time can damage the pump.
