2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Power Steering Pump on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: While servicing or repairing your power steering pump, stop the engine first and check the fluid to keep parts from moving and harming you. Don't use any fluid other than Mopar Atf+4 in the power steering system, since this may damage both the pump and the setup; make sure not to overfill. Carefully clean the filler cap and look at the fluid level, as it should be marked Cold at average temperature. Still with full left turn, refill the pump reservoir and make sure the fluid settles for at least 2 minutes. With the engine turned off, jack up the car's front wheels, turn the steering wheel all the way left to right 20 times and check the oil level; if your vehicle has long lines or an oil cooler, turn the wheel 40 times. Start the engine and check that the stuff in the reservoir is not going down. Drop the front of the car and idle the engine for two minutes; while doing so, use the steering wheel to ensure both the power assist and quiet performance. Should the fluid have the appearance of excessive foam or seem milky, stop the vehicle and check the procedure after a few minutes since extended high foam in the fuel pump may damage it.
