How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500?

Before touching the crankshaft rear seal, take off the battery negative connectors, remove the transmission and transfer case where equipped and lift the clutch cover and disc for manual vehicles. After that, remove both the flywheel or converter drive plate. Drill 180° apart between the holes in the seal, watching you do not damage the crankshaft and attach # 10 sheet metal screws in the holes, towards the rear end of the engine. It is necessary to clean any oil from the seal lip and sealing surface of the crankshaft before attempting installation, since both areas must be smooth and dry. Soap and water will help you get the seal mounted more easily. Use a solvent to clean the crankshaft journal and then wipe it dry with a shop towel or blow it out with compressed air. Remember to wipe the inside bore of the crankshaft seal retainer. Check the crankshaft journal for any scratches or scuffs. If the depth of the seal groove is too great, add a new seal 1/8" into the retainer bore or obtain a crankshaft wear sleeve from your aftermarket supplier. Lock the seal pilot and new seal onto the crankshaft as part of the kit and then remove the seal pilot. Put the alignment tool over the crankshaft and, using a ball peen hammer, strike the tool through all four holes: 12, 3, 6 and 9 until it bottoms out over the retainer. Mount the flywheel or converter drive plate again, with bolts tightened to 137 Nm (101 ft. lbs.) and then add the clutch cover and disc in the case. If the vehicle is equipped, put the transmission and transfer case back in place, lower it, hook back up the negative cables, check the oil amount and adjust if required and finally check for oil leaks after starting the engine.
