The first step in servicing and fixing the starter motor is to remove and isolate both the negative cables from the batteries and next support the vehicle by raising it off the ground. Detach the three mounting bolts, but be sure to hold the starter as you move it to the front, making sure the nose of the starter pinion fits under the housing. Tilt the nose down until you can grab the side of the car to remove the nuts from the starter wiring harness. Unmount the starter, remembering that diesel engines often require you to notice both the position and orientation of any aluminum spacer placed between the starter and the starter mounting bracket.
