  • Q: How to service the Cigarette Lighter (auxiliary power outlet) on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
    A: Make sure to disconnect and remove the battery negative cable from the car to avoid air bags going off when you open the cigarette lighter. Unscrew the knob on the cigar light and remove the element from the base or remove the plastic cover from the bottom of the cigarette lighter receptacle base. Find the position of the four rectangular retaining bosses attached to the receptacle base inside the instrument panel. Use the external snap ring pliers to attach the metal tips to the retaining bosses, squeeze them tight and then carefully rock the pliers as you pull the base out of the mount. Unplug the wire harness connector from its socket in the panel and take out the mount from the accessory switch on the panel. Slide the mount into the accessory switch plate and attach the wire harness connector to the receptacle base again. Spread out the splines and fit them into the grooves on the mount, then push until the retaining bosses snap into place. Afterwards, put back on the lighter knob, install the element or protective cap and reconnect the negative battery cable.
