  The very first step to replace the cigar lighter or power outlet is to remove and set apart the negative battery cable. Remove the cigar lighter knob and element from the base of the receptacle or unsnap the safety cap from the outlet receptacle base. Check the inside of the base of the receptacle to figure out where the rectangular retaining bosses attach it to the instrument panel. Use the proper pliers to get the tips onto the bosses, then squeeze them and gently rock to take out the base from the mount. Take the wire harness connector off the instrument panel mount and remove the mount from the accessory switch plate. To mount the system, put the mount back in the accessory switch plate and then reconnect the wire harness. Put the splines of the connector into the grooves on the mount base, then press the connector down firmly so the retaining bosses slide into the mounting holes. Secure the protective cap or element back in place, tack on the cigar lighter knob and lastly attach the negative battery cable.

  Before you begin on the cigarette lighter, first remove and separate the battery's negative cable. Lift off the cigar lighter knob and pull out the element from the base or unsnap the cap on the larger side of the cigarette lighter base. Open the interior of the receptacle base and find the rectangular retaining bosses which hold it in place on the instrument panel lower bezel. Open the external snap ring pliers, making sure they are hugging the bosses, squeeze the pliers and wiggle them as you pull up to remove the base from the mount. Take the wire harness connector off the instrument panel receptacle base. After that, take the mount out of the accessory switch plate on the instrument panel. After positioning the mount, set it in the accessory switch plate and attach the wire harness cable back to where it came from. Place the splines on the base connector over the matching grooves inside the mount, then carefully push until all the retaining bosses are inserted. After that, put the cigar lighter knob and element or protective cap back on and reattach the battery negative cable.
