2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a rear axle equipped with an 8 1/4 Wheel Bearing on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Take out the axle shaft and then use a little pry bar to remove the axle shaft seal from the axle tube when servicing or repairing an 8 1/4 rear axle bearing. You can take out the seal and bearing at once with the special removal tool. After that, take out the axle shaft bearing using Bearing Removal Tool Set 6310 and Adapter Foot 6310-9. Make sure to clean any burrs or removed old sealants from the axle tube bore for installation. Secure the axle shaft bearing into position using C-4198 Installer and C-4171 Handle, so that the part number is visible to installers. To replace the axle seal, place Handles C-4735-1 onto the spacer and screw in the Installer C-4076-B until you feel it touching the axle. Add a layer of axle lubricant on the seal's edge before fitting in the axle shaft. A bead of red Mopar Silicone Rubber Sealant or the same product should be applied to the housing cover and if the cover is not installed within 3 to 5 minutes, remove it, clean off the old sealant and apply new RTV. attach the cover and use a crisscross pattern to tighten the bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Put lubricant into the differential until it fills the hole almost up to the plug, then replace the fill hole plug.
