2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair rear Coil Springs on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: Lift the vehicle on a jack or hoist with the lift below the section of frame crossmember that precedes the rear axle, to keep the side rail flange safe from pressure. Lift the vehicle at the frame and use a hydraulic jack to lessen the axle's weight before taking out the wheel and tire assembly. After that, get rid of the U-bolt nuts, spring plate, U-bolts and spring seat from the axle, along with the nut and bolt from the shackle mounting bracket and the nut and bolt from the front spring eye. After finishing that, let go of the nut and bolt from the rear of the spring, then remove the shackle. The first step in installation is to put the spring shackle into the rear spring eye and fasten it with a nut and bolt tightened by fingers. Attach the spring on the rear axle pad so the center bolt lines up with the hole in the pad and then slip the spring front eye into the hole at the front of the rail arch bracket and secure it with a bolt and nut, just snug. Place the spring shackle eye against the hole in the shackle bracket, insert the bolt and nut and turn them by hand until the spring eye is even with the shackle bracket's pivot bolt. Put the spring seat onto the car, secure it with the U-bolts and spring plate and cover the U-bolts with nuts, torquing them to a value of 237 Nm (175 ft. lbs.). Reattach the wheel and tire assembly, get rid of the stands and set down your vehicle. Tighten the front spring eye nut to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) and the shackle nuts all the way to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
