2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Automatic Transmission Filter in a NAG1 Transmission on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Before starting NAG1 transmission fluid and filter service, let the engine run to reach normal temperature and then place the vehicle on jack stands. Pull the torque converter drain plug access plug out of the hole at the bottom of the torque converter housing and operate the engine until the drain plug lines up with the access hole. Meanwhile, wipe the area near the drain plug to block dirt. Set up a drain pan under the car, remove the torque converter drain plug, let everything settle and check the torque converter drain plug seal, replacing it if worn. After the torque converter drain plug is installed, tighten it to 14 Nm or 10 ft. lbs. and finally put in the access plug. Following this, put a drain pan underneath, unscrew the drain plug in the transmission oil pan and wait until all the oil has drained, replacing the old plug seal if necessary. Slide in the new transmission seal, tighten the drain plug into the oil pan to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and remove the old oil pan and its gasket. Tear the oil filter and O-ring out of the electrohydraulic control unit, clear out the oil pan of any remains and replace the gasket beneath it when necessary. Once you're done with those tasks, put the transmission's oil pan and gasket back on, secure them with the bolts and retainers and then tighten them to 8 Nm (70 inch lbs.). Drive the car so the wheels come off the ground, then add 7.0 L (7.4 qts.) of transmission fluid to the transmission and check its oil level.
