Dodge Sprinter 3500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Replace an Automatic Transmission Filter on Dodge Sprinter 3500?
    A:
Before servicing and repairing the automatic transmission fluid and filter, bring the engine to operating temperature by driving and then props the vehicle safely on top of stands. Remove the plug underneath the torque converter and start the engine slowly, continuing to turn it clockwise until the drain plug is in the access hole. Don't forget to wipe any dirt around the drain so it doesn't enter the torque converter. With a proper drain pan in place, take out the torque converter drain plug and let the fluid drain out, looking at the torque converter drain plug seal. If needed, replace the seal and put in a new gasket. Replace the torque converter drain plug (8) with the bolt and tighten it to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.), then replace the torque converter drain plug access plug. After that, with the right drain pan beneath, take out the transmission Oil Pan drain plug (6) and let out all the oil in the pan. Check the seal on the drain plug (7) and replace it if it's damaged. Reinstall drain plug 6 and tighten it to 20 Nm or 15 ft. lbs. Temporarily remove the transmission oil pan by taking out its bolts and retainers, then remove the gasket as well. Replace the filter (1) and the O-ring (2) after removing each from the transmitter oil filter housing, empty and check the oil pan (3) for debris and determine if the gasket (2) should be replaced. Install an oil filter and O-ring into the electrohydraulic control unit and then put the oil pan and gasket back into position on the transmission. With screw drivers, attach the retainers and then install the five bolts into the oil pan. Reduce the car, place 5.0 L (10.6 pts.) of transmission fluid into the transmission, then see if the system is full.
