2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter on 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Before you service the fluid filter for the automatic transmission, turn on the engine until the fluid heats up inside the car. Remove the bottom access plug from the torque converter housing and use a clean rag to clean around the torque converter drain plug before you align the plug with the open hole and rotate the engine clockwise. Take off the torque converter drain plug (8) with a drain pan underneath and make sure all the liquid has gone. Replace the drain plug seal (9), if it shows any signs of wear. Attach the drain plug of the torque converter (8) and fasten it with 14 Nm of torque, then put in the torque converter drain plug access plug. After that, take out the oil pan drain plug (6) using a suitable drain pan and let all the oil drain out, checking and replacing the drain plug seal (7): Replace the drain plug for the transmission oil pan (6) and torque it to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Take out the bolts (5), retainers (4) and transmission oil pan (3) and its gasket (2). Take the filter (1) and O-ring out of the torque converter, put the pan aside, clean the inside of the oil pan (3) of any dirt and examine the oil pan gasket (2). If it is damaged or worn, replace it. Hit the instruction points: (1) put in a new oil filter and an O-ring, then (2) put the gasket on the transmission and lastly (3) reinstall the oil pan. Place the oil pan bolts (5) and retainers (4) and tighten them to 8 Nm (about 70 inch lbs.). Draw out the race and place 5.0 Liters (10.6 points) of transmission fluid into the transmission, before checking the oil level.
