2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft in an Engine on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: You must first disconnect the engine, then lift out the timing case cover as well as the end cover, before you can deal with the pistons. It's very important to be aware that the bearing caps are marked gradually from the first up front to the last at the rear and they should all be fitted carefully. Test the crankshaft bearing caps and check their bolts for stretching and wear before you remove the crankshaft. Be sure to lubricate the bearing shells first and make sure the oil grooves in the thrust washers are directing towards the thrust collars of the crankshaft during installation. Two lugs are included in the design of the thrust washers attached to the bearing cap so that the washers do not twist while the motor is running. Smear oil on the bolts and contact parts that hold the crankshaft bearing caps, just as you did with the main bearings and rotate the crank while checking that it has clearance. Install the crankshaft and the bearing caps, first tighten the bolts to 55 Nm (40.5 ft. lbs.), then move on to an additional 90°. Then, fit the pistons, end cover and timing case cover and finally drop in the engine. Make sure both the engine oil and coolant levels are set and at the proper mark. Afterward, attach the negative battery terminal and during running, be very careful not to stand by the fan and keep your hands away from any belts or pulleys. Turn on the engine and check for fuel leaks, always being aware of any fuel system alarm.
