2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely and Effectively Service a Water Pump on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Always start with avoiding skin and eye contact with hot coolant and avoid swallowing it. Do not open the cooling system until it's cool and when you do, make sure you are protected by following the given tips. Take out the negative battery cable at the start and let the coolant drain from the system. Separate the sticky fan clutch from the vehicle, disconnect the fuel pipes from their position on the water pump bracket and release the coolant pipes at the water pump. Push down and off the cap at the belt guide pulleys, remove the belt guide pulleys and remove the water pump by taking out its bolts. Place the engine's original accessory drive belt pulley on the water pump for a good fit, line up the water pump onto the engine with the new gasket and tighten M8 bolts to 14 Nm (124 inch lbs.) and all other bolts to 20 Nm (177 inch lbs.). Put the washer behind the guide pulley for correct placement and then set the belt guide pulleys along with their bolts to a tightness of 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Reattach the coolant hoses to the water pump, tighten their clamps, attach the fuel lines to their brackets, put the accessory drive belt on and set the viscous fan clutch into place. After that, seal the radiator or engine drain plug, put enough coolant and water into the cooling system as needed and check for any leaks.
