2004 Chrysler Pacifica Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can a Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the Air Conditioning System, and What Precautions Are Necessary on 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: All models allow you to change the water pump without losing air conditioning gas, but make sure to keep the pressure cap on during installation to stop hot coolant from burning you. If you notice a little coolant leak from the weep hole, that's not a problem, but if you find a major coolant deposit or a continuing leak, this points to a shaft seal failure and requires changing the water pump after thorough examination. You should drain the cooling system first, followed by removing the engine timing belt, to remove the water pump. After this, unbolt the water pump from the engine, remembering how to place the longer bolt when you put it back. Look over the pump for any harm such as breaks, thick areas of dried glycol nearby, indicator marks from the impeller rubbing the rear timing belt cover and turning bearings that are either excessively loose or too rough. Any of these problems means the water pump needs to be replaced. Clean each O-ring area on the pump and cover, oil the O-ring with Mopar Dielectric Grease and place a new O-ring on the pump. Place the water pump in position at the engine, add and tighten the mounting bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), install the timing belt and then fill up the cooling system.
