2004 Chrysler Sebring Torque Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Torque Converter on 2004 Chrysler Sebring?
A: First, take out the transmission and torque converter after the vehicle is placed over a suitable drain pan below the converter housing. Makes sure the device or work table is secure, because the center of gravity moves with the torque converter is not being held by the backhoe which adds weight to the backhoe. Place the rear of the converter forward to the point where the center hub is clear of the oil pump seal and then take it off. Check the converter hub and drive for any sharp points, scratches or nicks and if you find them, smooth them out with 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth. Add transmission fluid to both the converter hub and oil pump seal lip and ensure the torque converter goes into the transmission without damaging the oil pump seal or bushing. Set the torque converter with the oil pump seal face, fit the hub into the opening of the pump and as you push in, spin the converter to sit properly on the oil pump gears. Use a scale and straightedge to see that the converter lugs are 1/2 in. from the rear end of the straightedge when the bolts are fully seated. When the converter can't be screwed in during installation, hold it briefly with a C-clamp attached to the housing before putting the transmission in the vehicle and topping it up with the recommended fluid.
