2004 Chrysler Town & Country Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Shift Cable for the 41TE Automatic Transmission on 2004 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: The first step to working on the 41TE gearshift cable is disconnecting your car's battery, taking out its shield and removing the battery. Take out the speed control servo and place it somewhere it won't get in your way. Remove the gear shift cable from the manual valve lever and the upper mount bracket. Take out the instrument panel lower silencer and the knee bolster. Loosen the cable from the gear shift lever and take it out of the hook on the column bracket. Pull the grommet out of the dash and take the gear shift cable out from inside the car. Lift the vehicle and access the dash panel through the opening. Next, pull the gear shift cable through the panel to the engine compartment and place the grommet in place. Feed the gear shift cable up the column till you hear a clear click, then attach it to the gear shift lever. Replace the knee bolster underneath the driver's seat and attach the instrument panel lower silencer. Connect the cable to the mount above the transaxle which you will hear with another click, then join the other cable end to the manual valve handle inside the transaxle. Change the gearshift cable, then fit the speed control servo, battery and battery shield and only attach the battery cables after they are in place.
