2004 Dodge Caravan Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Right Rear Parking Brake Cable on 2004 Dodge Caravan?
A: Before servicing the right rear parking brake cable, lift the car on jackstands or a hoist and remove the rear wheel and tire. After that, open the rear brake drum to locate the rear park brake cable. By locking out the rear parking brake cable adjuster and straddling the front cable with your hands, pull it down then install locking pliers at a point just rearward of the outrigger bolt. Untie the cable from the main cable connector that runs toward the brake pedal. You have to use a 14 mm box end wrench to compress the retaining fingers of the right cable, as the cable housing won't come off with the aircraft clamp. Leave the brake shoes out of the way and detach the parking brake cable at the parking brake actuator lever on the side. Take off the 14 mm wrench and push in the parking brake fingers while removing the retainer from the brake support plate. When installing, attach the rear parking brake cable to the brake support plate and then put the cable housing retainer in place, making sure the fingers keep it locked. Link the parking brake cable to the parking brake actuator lever and then put the rear brake shoes back on the support plate. Secure the cable housing retainer in the body outrigger bracket for a good fit and after that, link the parking brake cable on the right rear to the connector on the intermediate cable. After reinstalling the brake drum and the wheel and tire, take off the locking pliers from the cable of the front park brake to permit automatic adjustment. Lower the vehicle, then hit the park brake pedal just once to make sure the park brake cables are seated.
