2004 Dodge Caravan Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Cylinder on 2004 Dodge Caravan?
A: Secure the brake pedal a little past its first 1 inch with a brake pedal depressor to prevent any draining of brake fluid when you remove the brake tube from the wheel cylinder. Pull up the area below the vehicle and lift out the wheel and tire assembly. Take the brake tube from the rear of the wheel cylinder and cover any open ends with caps. Undo the brake drum and brake shoes from the brake support plate and toss out those parts that are dirty. Undo the 2 bolts holding the wheel cylinder to the brake support plate and take the wheel cylinder away from the connection. After removing the brake drums, examine the wheel cylinder boots for leaks, damage, rips or even heat cracks. If there are issues, replace the wheel cylinder boots and especially clean and examine the wheel cylinders. Should a wheel cylinder experience a leak and the brake lining soak up brake fluid, get new brake shoes. Before installing the wheel cylinder, run a sealant inside the brake support plate on the area where the cylinder will sit and at the end tighten the bolts to 8 Nm (75 in. lbs.). Put the brake tube into the wheel cylinder, then tighten it to 17 Nm or 145 in. lbs. After that, attach the rear brake shoes to the brake support plate and then place the brake drum. After fitting the wheel and tire, force the wheel lug nuts into place with 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs. of torque) and adjust the drum brake shoes. Take out the brake pedal depressor tool, perform the necessary bleed on your brakes and bring your car down from its lift.
