Dodge Caravan vehicles' Wheel Cylinder is an essential hydraulic drum brake equipment whose main function is to expand the brake shoes against the brake drum for proper stopping mechanisms. It uses hydraulic pressure to push the pistons in the cylinder outwards and in doing so the shape of the shoes makes contact with the drum. The structure of the Wheel Cylinder generally comprises of a centre tube, two rubber sealed piston and an expander spring responsible for positioning the seals. Since Dodge Caravan models began, they been using both cast iron and Aluminum Wheel Cylinders with new models shifting to Aluminum to avoid rust formation. In some designs, the layouts are literally dual single-piston in configuration however the fundamental function remains similar for all. Annual check up and servicing is compulsory, that is because leakage poses a serious problem that diminishes stopping power, in this case it would require Wheel Cylinder rebuild or even replacement for safety in driving.

Dodge Caravan Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Disassemble and Reassemble a Wheel Cylinder on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
To take apart the wheel cylinders, pry the boots off and take them out. Press a Piston to make the other piston, cup and spring shoot out of the anemometer. After that, apply the flat end of a dowel rod to firmly press out the worst residue from inside the wheel cylinder. Judge the cleanliness of the wheel cylinder, pistons and spring by immersing them in clean fluid or adding some alcohol and rinse and blow them dry when done. Look for signs of scoring or pitting on both the cylinder bore and the piston and prevent lint from sticking to the bore with anything other than a brand new cloth. When wheel cylinder bores or pistons are too damaged, you should replace them, but soft corrosion or shallow scratches on the cylinder walls can usually be cleaned away with a crocus cloth. Blackening on cylinder walls caused by piston cups will not slow down engine performance. Before joining the new pistons and cups in the wheel cylinders, dip them in fresh brake fluid. Should the old boots be damaged, broken or slipping from the pistons or cylinder casting, you should replace them. Cover the cylinder opening with clean brake fluid and lightly brush both sealing areas and the outside of the wheel cylinder cups with Mopar Protect-A-Cup Lubricant. After installing the expansion spring with cup expanders into the cylinder, place the cups at each end so their open faces face each other. After that, put a piston at both ends of the cylinder, making sure that the flat parts of both face one another and place a boot over each end while making sure you don't damage the boot while you install it.
