2004 Dodge Dakota Radiator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Radiator on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: First, unhook the battery negative cable and drain the radiator, but make sure you do not disconnect or loosen the cylinder block plugs and radiator draincock while your engine is hot and under pressure; this will lessen the danger of serious burns from hot coolant. Use the advised tools provided for constant tension hose clamps, like the special 6094 clamp tool or HPC-20 Snap-On tool and never forget to wear protection for your eyes when working. Get rid of the hose clamps and hoses from the radiator, separate the coolant reserve/overflow tank hose and remove the washer bottle electrical cable and hose. After that, take out the screws holding the upper fan shroud in place and carefully lift it out of the engine area. If you have all the tools, cut the lines from the transmission oil cooler and the coolant fan motor connection. Lift the radiator up after removing the upper mounting screws, trying not to damage the cooling fins. Blow away dust from the radiator fins with the aid of cold water and compressed air from the back of the unit. Check the radiator cooling fins and see if they are undamaged. Then, have a look at the rubber or plastic end tanks for cracks, damage or leaks and inspect the neck of the radiator. Set the radiator so that the isolator pins on each tank go into the corresponding alignment holes of the lower support, then tighten the radiator mount bolts to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.). If your car has a transmission oil cooler, replace its lines, attach the fan motor's connector, place the upper shroud onto the lower shroud and radiator and fasten the retaining screws in place. Once you have attached the radiator hoses, make sure also to connect the hose from the coolant reserve/overflow tank back to the radiator, then connect the battery negative cable. Fill the cooling system, begin running the engine and make sure there are no leaks.
