2004 Dodge Dakota Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace a Water Pump on a 4.7L Engine on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: The pump for 4.7L engines is installed directly to the engine timing chain case cover. Remove the negative terminal from the car battery first and drain all the liquid from the cooling system. Pull the fan/viscous fan drive assembly from the water pump but leave it attached to the vehicle. Servicing constant tension hose clamps requires you to use service tools such as the clamp tool 6094 and Snap-On tool HPC-20, worn with safety glasses. Do not remove the fan blade assembly from the main thermal viscous fan drive when changing the water pump. After that, unscrew the two fan shroud-to-radiator bolts and remove the coolant overflow hose, windshield washer fluid hose and washer pump connection from the power train wiring harness. Once done, lift off the upper fan shroud and take out the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly. Make sure the thermal viscous fan drive is placed upright to stop silicone fluid from contaminating the lubricant. Carefully take out the accessory drive belt, detach the radiator clamp at the bottom and disconnect the water pump's lower hose seal. After taking out the seven water pump mounting bolts and the single stud bolt, be careful not to pull on the water pump at the timing chain case/cover, because it could damage the machined parts. Disconnect the water pump and toss away the old gasket and be sure to not harm the gasket mating surface during cleaning. Look for any leaks, cracks, loosened bearings or rubbing from the pump's impeller inside the pump body or the timing case/cover. Before installing, clean up the surfaces the gaskets will touch, set the new gasket and water pump in place and use a 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.) wrench to tighten the mounting bolts. Turn the water pump to see if the impeller will rub against the timing chain case/cover and after this, hook up the radiator lower hose to the water pump. Unwind the tension from the belt tensioner and place the drive belt on correctly, ensuring the water pump can't get damaged by rotating in the wrong direction. Make sure the upper shroud and the fan blade/viscous fan drive are correctly placed and that the two ends of the shroud sit tight for good airflow in the radiator. Attach the two screws from the fan shroud to the radiator and leave a symmetrical gap of at least 25 mm (1.0 inches) from the fan blades to the shroud, then install the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to the water pump shaft. Fill the water, connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and look for any leaks around the system.
