2004 Dodge Durango Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: When changing the transmission fluid and filter, use only Mopar ATF +4, Automatic Transmission Fluid, inside the sump and make sure to update the filter as you drain the old fluid. Remove all the oil pan's dirt with a clean and dry cloth if the magnet is reachable from inside. If the gearbox is opened, change your transmission fluid and the filter as well. Start by hoisting the vehicle and setting a container under where the transmission oil will drain out. The oil pan bolts have a sealing patch from the factory and this needs to be separated to reuse. Release the bolts securing the pan and knock on one side of the pan to help it come away, while the fluid drains out, then remove the oil pan. Put a new filter and O-ring on the lower part of the valve body and tighten the screws to 5 Nm (40 inch lbs.). After drying the oil pan bolt in the magnetic cup, fill the gasket with Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive before reattaching it. Wash the oil pan and magnet, feature them, use new Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant and tighten the oil pan bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Place four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 through the dipstick opening, turn on the engine and allow it to idle for a minute. After engaging the parking and service brakes, position the lever one time through each setting until you reach park or neutral. Ensure the transmission fluid is at 3 mm (1/8 inch) below the lowest mark, then recheck how much fluid is there after the transmission reaches 180°F. Match the dipstick's tip with the dipstick opening, so nothing can enter the transmission.
