2005 Dodge Durango Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter for the 42RLE 4-Speed Transmission on 2005 Dodge Durango?
A: When servicing or repairing the fluid filter for the 42RLE 4 Speed transmission, add only Mopar ATF+4, Automatic Transmission Fluid and replace the filter during the normal oil change. If the oil filter is changed, clean the magnets and if the transmission is not assembled, change the oil and filter as well. Start with the vehicle on a hoist, empty the transmission oil pan into a drain container. With the pan bolts taken off, note there's a special seal on one bolt intended for reuse and tap the pan at a corner so it will release the oil inside and can be removed easily. Replace the filter and O-ring on the bottom of the valve body and tighten the retaining screws to 5 Nm (40 inch lbs.). Before you put in the oil pan bolt in the proper position, put some new Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive to cover the sealing patch. Clean both the oil pan and magnet, apply fresh Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant to the pan and install it using only 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.) of tightening. Put in four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the dipstick opening, start your car and run it for approximately one minute without driving it. With the car stopped and both brakes applied, drive the selector lever through all the positions, ending in park or neutral. After checking the transmission fluid level, if it is not full to the lowest point on the dipstick, add fluid until it is three millimeters below that mark. Then, after the transmission has cooled to normal operation temperature (180 degrees Fahrenheit), recheck the fluid level. Drive the dipstick into its seat so no dirt can pass into the transmission.
