How to Service and Repair an 8 1/4 Axle Shaft on 2004 Dodge Durango?

When working on the rear axle with an 8 1/4 shaft, lift the vehicle on a hoist and put it in neutral first. Take off the caliper adapter and the caliper along with the rotor. After that, loosen the differential housing cover and empty the oil from the unit. Raise the differential case so the pinion mate shaft lock screw (4) is accessible; remove screw (4) and the pinion mate shaft (1) from the inside of the differential case. Push the axle shaft (2) toward yourself to remove the axle shaft C-lock (1) and then remove the axle shaft. Lubricate the bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant, then push axle shaft (1) through seal (2) and secure it into the side gear splines. Pull the axle so that the C-lock slides into the side gear. After that, guide the pinion shaft into the case through the two pairs of differential washers and their matching differential pinions and ensure the shaft hole matches the hole in the differential case. Install lock screw (4) with Loctite on the threads and adjust it to 25 Nm (220 inch lbs.) at the end. Reinstall the differential cover, fill it with the right gear lubricant and then replace the brake rotor and caliper adapter with the caliper.
