2004 Dodge Grand Caravan Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Wheel Speed Sensor on 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Steps for servicing the rear wheel speed sensor are to get under the car, avoid damaging the pins and look out for damage on connectors during the process. Get rid of the grommet attached to the floor pan and disconnect the connector for the speed sensor cable. While taking the cable out of the routing clips, do not touch them or bend them back, because they are directly attached to the brake hose, making a break in them require changing the hose. Use care to get the cable for the speed sensor out of the clips around the brake lines and the tubing and then loosen and take out the screw holding the metal clip to the rear wheel axle. If you find that the speed sensor head is corroded and seized, don't use pliers; instead, gently knock the mounting flange edge from side to side with a hammer and punch. Remove both the bolt and the sensor head joined to the axle of the wheel. When you put the wheel speed sensor cables in place, avoid having them near moving parts and make sure the ends are tight. If they become loose or stuck against anything, it could result in an open circuit. Place the wheel speed sensor head over the axle flange and check that the plastic anti-rotation pin is suiting tightly in the bearing flange, then tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Examine the distance between the front of the wheel speed sensor and the surface of the tone wheel. Make sure you don't damage the routing clips installed onto the hose, as it is difficult to replace them and more expensive. Run the speed sensor cable under the leaf spring, towards the brake hose and tubing. Secure it with the routing clips on both sides, then attach the metal routing clip to the speed sensor cable and mount it at the back of the axle with a bolt that is tightened to 16 Nm (140 in. lbs.). Attach the wheel speed sensor cable to the vehicle's wiring harness, fully locking the connector in place. After that, put the speed sensor cable grommet into the floor pan, make sure it goes all the way in, lower the car and try the vehicle on the road to check if the base and ABS brake systems work properly.
