2004 Dodge Intrepid Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2004 Dodge Intrepid?
A: First, take off the primary timing chain and the secondary chain tensioner's mounting bolts before removing the camshaft. The first exhaust camshaft bearing cap, as produced during engine building, should be marked "1E> 2.7L." First, unwind the bolts for the camshaft bearing caps, starting with the last one installed and remove the caps when all the bolts are loosened. Remove the camshafts, secondary chain and tensioner as a set assembly and then pull the chain out of the camshafts after that. Check if the camshaft bearing journals are sticking and look for debris stopping up the oil holes in the cylinder head. Inspect the sprockets of the camshaft for deep wear and the cam lobe surfaces for defects; replace the camshaft when there are defects, measuring the actual wear at 0.0254 mm (0.001 in.) and allowing wear up to 0.254 mm (0.010 in.). While setting up, remove the timing chain and do not turn the camshaft or crankshaft until the appropriate crankshaft point is found so no valve or piston damage can happen. Put together the camshaft chain on the cams by placing the plated links toward the front, next to the dots on the sprockets. When the camshaft chain tensioner is already compressed and locked, you can go to the next part of the guide. If it does not fit, place and compress the tensioner in a soft jaw vise and carefully push a fabricated lock pin into the locking holes before taking it out. Add the tensioner onto the chain between the cams and rotate them together until the plated links and dots are at 12:00 on the cams. Mount the camshafts to the cylinder head while putting the rocker arms into their correct places. Set the camshaft bearing caps back into their holes and screw them in until the tightness reaches 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), following the proper order. After that, bolt in the rest of the tensioner bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), remove the pins from the tensioners, measure the camshaft end play and connect the main timing chain.
