2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Locate, Remove, and Install the Camshaft Position Sensor on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2004 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: The 5.9L diesel engine Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is under the fuel injection pump, attached to the back of the timing gear cover. Before you take out the sensor, connect the CMP sensor electrical connector and remove its bolt from the timing gear cover while observing the sensor's O-ring. Divide the timing gear cover's machined hole and lubricate the sensor O-ring with engine oil before fixing it into place. Insert the sensor into the timing gear cover, gently rocking it to place it right and do not twist it to keep the O-ring intact. Before you screw in the sensor mounting bolt, check that the sensor is pressed firmly against the back of the timing chain cover to not damage the box. After that, attach the mounting bolt, tighten it by the Torque Specifications and then link the electrical connector to the sensor.
